Leather Briefcase Restoration

Before and during the restoration process.
A very well-used and loved leather briefcase came into the workshop with significant wear to the lining and structure (see the 'before' images above).
The main flap lining had torn through, the stabiliser material had disintegrated, the handle tab was split and close to failing, there were several other holes in the lining throughout and the back pocket zip needed repairing.
The damaged lining was removed, a new stabiliser piece added and material from a less-used internal pocket was repurposed to replace the main flap lining to match the rest of the briefcase. A new pocket lining was then made using a stronger cotton.
The handle tab was rebuilt to restore strength at the fixing point, and the zip was repaired to return the pocket to full function.
The leather was then cleaned with saddle soap and conditioned to stabilise areas that had dried out over time. The brass fittings had a clean up with some Brasso to bring back their shine.
The aim was not to make the piece look new, but to return it to reliable, everyday use while respecting its age and character (see 'after' images below).
Repairs are often a balance between preserving what can be kept and replacing what has failed.
